It appears that the select command requires specific documentation files to be in place in order to work correctly.
oxsyn@purgatory:~$ sudo port select --set bpython bpython27 Selecting 'bpython27' for 'bpython' failed: could not create new link "/opt/local/share/man/man1/bpython.1": target "/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/share/man/man1/bpython.1" doesn't exist

What version of the py27-bpython do you have? Would you please paste the output of
port select
works for me with py27-bpython @0.12_2.
