    1 "Version: 2.8" isn't entirely accurate, since the error would have been thrown by the 2.7.2 code that had just built 2.8. Running a forced selfupdate with 2.8.0 would be a useful experiment. Maybe there's something unusual about some of the files in the 2.8.0 source dir that chown doesn't like?
