I'm not really sure what to expect from the ao plugin. The default output.plugin is coreaudio which seems to work fine. But trying to switch the configuration to output.plugin=ao fails as follows
$ xmms xmms2> server config output.plugin output.plugin = coreaudio xmms2> server config output.plugin ao Failed in file ../src/clients/lib/xmmsclient/result.c on row 374
Some additional configuration items that might have something to do with it are
xmms2> server config ao.device ao.device = default xmms2> server config ao.driver ao.driver = default

I'm not familiar with xmms2... what command(s) do I need to type to see the crash on my system?
