Hi all,
Some additional information regarding the problem.
The MacBook Pro running Sierra was a clean install of the OS with all the latest patches with the latest software:
XQuartz 2.7.11 XCode 8.2.1 command line packages was installed as part of the MacPorts and xfig steps. Sierra Patches MacPorts 3.5.1 with xfig
I do have another MacBook Air that was upgraded to Sierra from El Capitan with MacPorts and xfig working.
* The MacPorts with xfig was installed in El Capitan before the Sierra upgrade. *
Regards,
Carl

I need more info - saving/loading works for me
If you migrated to a new system, make sure you follow the docs

Reopen if you have more info or of the migration didn't work
I thought the upgrade last summer fixed that - I'll test it again
