Replying to kencu:
your noted build error is for clang-16, not llvm-16:
The buildbot seemed to have no trouble with it.
https://packages.macports.org/clang-16/clang-16-16.0.6_1+analyzer.darwin_12.x86_64.tbz2
Indeed, it is clang-16
is broken and not llvm-16
. I was confused by directory name.
llvm-16
has installed fine:
10:~ svacchanda$ port -v installed llvm-16 The following ports are currently installed: llvm-16 @16.0.6_0+universal (active) requested_variants='+universal' platform='darwin 12' archs='i386 x86_64' date='2023-07-28T03:11:13+0800'
Now, I do not know why it is broken, but it is for sure not due to any hacks on my side: I have neither need nor any desire to do that on 10.8.5. It is a purely testing set-up and uses standard Macports tools. No building with GCC and alike.

We had successful builds of clang @16.0.6 on all buildbot workers for Mac OS X 10.6 and later on July 3-4.
Comparing the buildbot log from 10.8 with yours, I see these differences:
- yours is building universal for i386 & x86_64 while the buildbot is building only for x86_64 (this could be the relevant difference)
- yours found /opt/local/bin/git; buildbot found /usr/bin/git (probably irrelevant)
- yours failed the
CXX_SUPPORTS_UNWINDLIB_NONE_FLAG
andCOMPILER_RT_HAS_FUSE_LD_LLD_FLAG
tests; on the buildbot they succeeded (maybe a consequence of building universal) - yours is building with
-j4
while the buildbot is using-j8
(probably irrelevant)
Diffing the build phase of the two logs is not so easy since parallel building means the lines are not in the same order between the two logs, but looking at a few things manually:
At the point in the log where yours fails, we're building target cxxabi_static. On the buildbot it is using many warning flags like -Wno-user-defined-literals
. Your build isn't using that, which is why you see the warnings warning: user-defined literal suffixes not starting with '_' are reserved [-Wuser-defined-literals]
.
Before that, in the build phase, cmake is run again when it is trying to build something using the just-built clang 16.0.6. This time, a relevant difference between the two is that yours failed nearly all of the tests, including the CXX_SUPPORTS_FALIGNED_ALLOCATION_FLAG
test, while most tests succeeded on the buildbot. That seems to match up with the ultimate error you're getting about aligned deallocation not being supported.

This is a likely suspect for the cause of the failure, but if universal is broken, it is a serious problem. It has also been working fine at least with Clang-14 and earlier; looks like I skipped building Clang-15 as universal here.
- yours found /opt/local/bin/git; buildbot found /usr/bin/git (probably irrelevant)
This is because Macports tree is built against a bootstrap one, to make git
work, since system one is essentially defunct on < 10.9.

Somewhat later I can try with Clang-15 to see if the failure existed already back then, as well as try Clang-16 for i386. I would assume x86_64 without universal should work, since no other relevant differences from buildbots.

Not by me. It would only be built on the buildbot if it were a dependency of another port. Looking at the packages directory, no successful build with universal exists for the current version, which either means it was not attempted or if it was attempted it failed:

So what could we do to address the issue, assuming it is indeed a failure of universal (which seems nearly a sure thing)?

Do not use +universal
where it is not necessary. This is an option I neither really support, and certainly do not test, with the llvm/clang builds.
You appear to just blindly use this across the board for all your ports, which for me is a poor choice.

So proposed solution is to ignore the bug? :) And we talk about the main default compiler on Intel? Well…
First of all, this won’t solve the issue for cases when universal is needed. Secondly, if decision is to let it be broken, please set universal variant to no, so users don’t end up wasting many hours to gets obscure failure. Better yet, pick an earlier Clang which actually works, when universal is called for.
I do not install ports “blindly” as universal. I need that for testing. It is supposed to work with Clangs on Intel, and normally it does.

Please, let's turn down the temperature.
Chris has both no systems that can run i386/x86_64 universal, and no interest in it. So that won't ever happen.
However, there are plenty of others who do have both systems and interest, and someone will either fix it (most likely) or change the defaults if it can't be fixed.
Give people some time. This "emergency" is barely discovered.

so most likely there is something not quite right with your 10.8 system.
The most common issue you would have, based on long long experience trying to help folks sort out this kind of issue, is that your Xcode or your CommandLineTools are out of date or mismatched, XcodeVersionInfo#OSX10.8, so please check to make sure your Xcode and installed tools are up to date, and match, like this:
xcrun --find clang /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Toolchains/XcodeDefault.xctoolchain/usr/bin/clang $ /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Toolchains/XcodeDefault.xctoolchain/usr/bin/clang --version Apple LLVM version 5.1 (clang-503.0.40) (based on LLVM 3.4svn) Target: x86_64-apple-darwin12.6.0 Thread model: posix $ /usr/bin/clang --version Apple LLVM version 5.1 (clang-503.0.40) (based on LLVM 3.4svn) Target: x86_64-apple-darwin12.6.0 Thread model: posix
If your tools are up to date and current for 10.8, then the most likely thing after that would be a conflicting port is installed, or you have the wrong ld64 or cctools variant selected.
$ port -v installed | grep ld64 | grep active ld64 @3_4+ld64_274+universal (active) requested_variants='+universal' platform='darwin 12' archs='i386 x86_64' date='2023-07-29T14:11:40-0700' ld64-274 @274.2_0+llvm37+universal (active) requested_variants='+universal' platform='darwin 12' archs='i386 x86_64' date='2023-07-29T14:11:38-0700' $ port -v installed | grep cctools | grep active cctools @949.0.1_3+llvm37+universal (active) requested_variants='+universal' platform='darwin 12' archs='i386 x86_64' date='2023-07-29T14:11:33-0700'

Interesting. Thank you very much for checking.
As for what is installed, what I quoted above is accurate:
cctools @949.0.1_3+llvm37+universal (active) ld64 @3_4+ld64_274+universal (active) ld64-274 @274.2_0+llvm37+universal (active)
Looks like identical to what you have. (Since this is 10.8, not 10.6, universal cannot include ppc, so i386+x86_64.)
I am away from that machine until tomorrow, but I recall initially I had outdated Apple tools, which was found out in some ticket, upon which I have updated those to the version I was referred to. I doubt they were updated since then, but I will check the version once I back.

if you find your toolchain is current, try your build again. Sometimes that works.
If that doesn’t work for you, then some conflicting port would be most likely.
No idea which one.

a bunch of universal builds of clang-16 are showing up here:
https://packages.macports.org/clang-16/
but not the one for 10.8 (yet). I am completely unable to know how to find that attempted build, successful or not, on the buildbot.
But it works fine for me, and the other universal builds, so it's still likely something unique to your machine.
If you really want to see it work, you would do this:
sudo port -f deactive active sudo port -v -N install clang-16 +universal
and then come back later to find it built.
If that does build on your system, as it likely will, then you will have confirmed some conflicting port was active.
I don't imagine anyone will ever bother to figure out which one, but if you really really wanted to know, you would add back batches of ports until the build fails....
