Ah, now I understand the line I removed from the autogen.sh patch in [23d5145e1c0c46128856e36c0f10a2a332d808da/macports-ports] that changed the value of
AUTOMAKE_REQUIRED_VERSION
. It looked unnecessary, but it was to counteract the fact that itscheck_version
function doesn't work correctly.
